Important discourse on left: die Prekariat. The Precarious (People).
A rubric which could resolve the contradiction between labor and immigration -- anyone who has beem marginalized by neo-liberal reordering.

Paradoxes still remain: CopyLeft and the contruction of the "Common" vs. respecting the labor of "knowledge workers." Freedom in all things -- except in economic decision-making. Here the state still must have a strong role.

Very important: transforming disempowerment of Precariousness - a lack - into self-organization. I´ve only met one immigrant here and few local people so this is a contradiction which must be resolved.

I am working on an essay on some of these contradictions.

Theme of cartography: "Social Mapping" to identify what networks are already in place to activate.

A very different discussion of mapping this morning - later.

Unionism as social justice unionism.

The question of how to organize "The Precarious" is under addressed. The very real danger for the immigrants protesting to be arrested/deported.

A very good insight: What are often perceived as "mafias" are in fact social networks "making do." The discourse of mafias is actually quite slippery.

Right now I have rare access to bandwidth because there is a fairly intense seminar happening so I´ll try to get out what I can.

The former leader of the Justice for Janitors campaign (now head of SEIU London office is speaking).

There is an amazing gap between the American approach and the European to organizing. Right now this leader is basically doing the classical American "start with your goal and work backwards." There is real tension here with some of the Germans groups I´ve spoken with who don´t look kindly at this model. They are more process-oriented. Everyone knows that pragmatism and goal-oientation are American cultural traits and they seem to profoundly disagree.

A very profound question that I´ll try to write about in a moment más tranquilo is how De Soto´s idea of property law being the cure for world poverty -- which I believe ...

Sandro : "Territory must be invented and re-invented. It is a function of social practices."

hey suz

right now i'm in Granada visiting Prof. Jerez Mir. Fadaiat was very unusual, a mixture of academic conference, activist planning session, art and music festival, live streaming web from a dialogue with Tangiers -- I wrote my Sieg paper about what they did last year and I wanted to check it out this year. You can find out more from the link which is the second or third entry in this blog.

It was unbelievable this year. I hope I'm up to the task of writing down my impressions later on. Last night was the festival of San Juan and all along the beach a string of bondfires all the way fro.m the watchtower into the coast and Spanish guitar and clapping and drummin. People were jumping over the fires. Morocco looks like you could swim right over there.
